The Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball team opened their fall schedule with a win over a state rival last week.

Louisiana defeated the Southeastern Louisiana Lions, 8-3, last Friday at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.

Multiple UL pitchers saw action in the 10-inning game, including 2019 All-American Summer Ellyson, and Megan Kleist, a 2018 All-American at Oregon, who transferred to Louisiana.

The two, who will both be seniors in 2020, combined to throw 6 shutout innings, with no walks and ten strikeouts.

Ellyson, the 2019 Sun Belt Conference of the Year, started the game, tossing three shutout innings, allowing only one hit, with no walks and five strikeouts.

Kleist twirled three shutout innings as well, allowing three hits and no walks, while also fanning five batters.

Casey Dixon, Carrie Boswell, Kandra Lamb, and Madison Garay also saw time inside of the circle.

Offensively, the Cajuns were led by senior catcher Julie Rawls, who went 3-for-4, including a home run, two runs scored, and three runs batted in.

Freshman Taylor Roman had a nice debut, going 2-for-4, including two doubles and two RBI's, while Geana Tores, a transfer from Missouri, collected two hits, both doubles while driving home a run.

Senior outfielder Sarah Hudek and infielder Melissa Mayeax, a junior college transfer, each doubled, as Louisiana outhit Southeastern Louisiana, 11-8.

The Cajuns return to fall action on Saturday when they host the McNeese Cowgirls at 10 am.

Louisiana went 52-6 in 2019, including a perfect 25-0 Sun Belt Conference record.
