Before the season started, much was made of the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns non-conference schedule.

And, with good reason.

The schedule had a weekend series with Texas, the Shriners' Houston Classic with Vandy, Kentucky and Mississippi State, three with South Alabama, two with Southern Miss and two with LSU, along with games against Tulane, Southeastern Louisiana, Nicholls, UNO and McNeese.

How strong was that schedule?

Well, according to the latest information from, which updates the info daily, the Cajuns have played the seventh strongest non-league schedule in America.

The University of San Diego ranked first in SOS, followed by Cal State Fullerton, North Carolina, Bethune-Cookman, Rhode Island, Miami, Louisiana, Georgia State, Florida State and Texas Tech.

In addition to the Cajuns and Georgia State (who meet this weekend in a big SBC series), other Sun Belt teams have scheduled tough.  In fact, eight of the twelve teams have a non-league SOS in the top 60.  Coastal Carolina checks in at 12, South Alabama at 13 and Georgia Southern at 18.  UTA is #41, Troy 44 and Little Rock 60.

That's pretty heady stuff.  And it has contributed to the Sun Belt being rated the sixth best conference in college baseball.

With four weekends remaining in the season, the rankings can, and probably will, fluctuate.  The Cajuns' non conference RPI will be directly affected by how those teams mentioned above fare in their final 15 or so games.  But as of now, 15 of the Cajuns' 24 non conference games have been played against teams in the RPI Top 60.  The Cajuns are 7-8 in those games.

The Cajuns' record is only 23-19.  But Louisiana is 11-3 in the second half of the season.  There is much work to be done to be considered for postseason play.  But the Cajuns have 14 games remaining and there are chances to boost their resume.

Stay tuned.
