It was a cold, foggy December night in Trumbull, Connecticut on Saturday as the Newtown Nighthawks faced the Darien High Blue Wave for the Class LL Football State Title.

Sometimes moments occur in sports that are simply magical and seem meant to be like there's got to be a higher power involved.

On Saturday, that seemed to be the case for Newtown as there were only three seconds remaining on the game clock and the score tied at 7. The Nighthawks possessed the football at the Blue Wave 36-yard line needing something special to happen if they wanted to avoid overtime.

Junior quarterback Jack Street dropped back scanning the field for an open receiver and spotted senior wide-out Riley Ward breaking free towards the right sideline. He let it fly and he put it on Ward right in stride so he could scamper into the endzone with all zero's on the clock. The perfect ending to the perfect season (13-0) on a date that means a whole heck of a lot to everybody in that community. 13-7 Newtown won it.

December 14th, the fateful day where 26 individuals lost their lives during one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history at Sandy Hook elementary.

The fact that Newtown High got the victory on this date was magical enough but if you look deeper it was the 7th anniversary of the Sandy Hook tragedy and right before the Nighthawks won, the game was tied at 7, crazy stuff.

Here's how it looked via Max Preps:

This victory was a little bit more special for one member of the Newtown football team in senior LB/TE Ben Pinto who's younger brother Jack, 6 lost his life during the tragedy.

As someone born and raised in this community I know how much it truly means to the people who live there or used to live there. When I heard they had won their first State Championship since 1992 on December 14th I honestly got chills, it's hard not to.

Always remember, be kind, choose love, and never forget those who lost their lives that day, so happy for my hometown.
