Tigers Clobber Commodores 66-38
#4 LSU's (4-0, 1-0) offense showed no signs of slowing down, leading the Tigers to a 66-38 road win at Vanderbilt, racking up 599 yards.
Quarterback Joe Burrow threw a school-record 6 touchdown passes, completing 25 of 34 pass attempts for 398 yards.
In addition to his program-record 6 TD passes, Burrow also became the first QB in LSU history to throw for more than 350 yards (357) in the first half of a game, and the first QB in school history to throw for 350+ yards in 3 consecutive games.
Joining Burrow in the record books was wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase, who caught 4 of Burrow's 6 TD passes today, a single-game record for an SEC game.
While the offense continued its dominance, the Tigers defense struggled at time with fundamentals.
"That had nothing to do with the offense," LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said of the defense. "We can’t make any excuses about tackling...getting in gaps and hopefully getting some guys healthy.”
The third phase of the game was special for the Tigers, especially linebacker Micah Baskerville.
He returned an onside kick 46 yards to begin the 2nd half. Not long after that, he blocked a Vanderbilt punt and recovered it for a touchdown.
The win came with a cost, as several key players suffered injuries.
Wide receiver Terrance Marshall fractured his foot, according to Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated, and will miss several weeks.
Linebacker Michael Dinivity injured himself during the game and was spotted with a walking boot on his right left following the win.
"It didn't look good," said Orgeron of Divinity's injury.
The Tigers enter a bye week before returning to action on October 5th in Baton Rouge for their final non-conference game of the season, hosting Utah State.
