LSU Runs Over Ole Miss

Coach Ed Orgeron and the LSU Tigers welcomed back star running back Leonard Fournette with open arms Saturday night against Ole Miss and he did not disappoint. Fournette rushed for 284 yards and 3 touchdowns as LSU beat Ole Miss 38-21, allowing the Tigers to stay unbeaten under Orgeron and improving to 5-2 overall.

After spotting Ole Miss a 10-0 lead, Fournette got the Tigers back in the game in a hurry. With 3:26 to play in the first quarter, Fournette took the handoff from Danny Etling and scampered 59 yards to pay dirt, bringing Tiger Stadium to life.

Trailing 10-7 early in the second quarter, Etling connected with DJ Clark on a 40 yard bomb over the middle, giving LSU its first lead of the night, 14-10. Following an Ole Miss field goal to cut the Tiger lead to 14-13 Fournette stuck again.

The New Orleans native went 76 yards over the right side to push LSU leads to 21-13. Fournette finished the first half with 171 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries.

Ole Miss pulled within two after Akeem Judd scored on a two-yard touchdown run. Chad Kelly then successfully called his own number on the two point try, allowing Ole Miss to tie the game at 21 with just 11 seconds to play in the first half. The Ole Miss touchdown was set up after Marquis Haynes sacked Etling, forcing a fumble that was recovered by the Rebels at the LSU nine yard line.

After intermission Fournette picked up right where he left off in the first half. Following an Ole Miss three and out Fournette broke the tie with a 78 yard run on LSU's first play of scrimmage of the second half. Giving the Tigers a 28-21 lead.

That touchdown would be all the breathing room the Tigers would need.

LSU would go on to pad its lead with a Colby Delahoussaye 44 yard field goal later in third quarter and Derrius Guice 6 yard run halfway through the fourth quarter, completing LSU's second half dominance of Ole Miss.

Fournette's 284 yards set a LSU single game rushing record. Etling finished the evening 19-28, for 204 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Not to be lost in the offensive fireworks, the LSU defense held a powerful Ole Miss offense to just 325 total yards and forced 2 turnovers. The Tiger defense limited the Rebels to just 128 yards on the ground.

The big win will give coach Orgeron and his Tigers plenty of momentum as they head into a bye week before taking on No 1 Alabama on November 5, in Baton Rouge.
