Jaguars Top Mississippi State, Three #1 Seeds Fall
The first day of the NCAA Regionals is always interesting, and Friday was no exception.
Three #1 seeds and six #2 seeds fell in the first round. One regional (Fort Worth) was completely rained out.
The Sun Belt started strong as Randy Bell pitched a complete game and Travis Swaggerty drove in four runs to lead South Alabama to a 6-3 win over Mississippi State. USA will now play Southern Miss, an 8-7 winner over UIC in Hattiesburg.
Other highlights from Day One:
#3 Sam Houston State defeated #2 Arizona 5-4 in Lubbock. A rematch from last year's first round in Lafayette. Former Cajun Riley Cooper was credited with the win, despite giving up two runs in 2.1 innings.
#2 Southeastern La. beat Rice 12-6 to earn a date with LSU
It was a good day for the SEC as seven of their eight teams were victorious. Only Mississippi State is in the loser's bracket.
#1 seeds that lost: Davidson 8, #2 national seed North Carolina 4, #$ Iowa 6 Houston 3, Tennessee Tech 3, Florida State 1
Games that featured a #3 beating #2 included wins by Sam Houston and South Alabama. Others were Auburn 6, UCF 4, NC State 7 Indiana 6 (12 inn), Texas A&M 8, Baylor 5, Yale 3 Nebraska 1
And, in a winners bracket game out in Palo Alto, Stanford fell to Cal State Fullerton 4-1. The Cardinal faces BYU in an elimination game today.
