
Good Weekend for the Sun Belt
It was, overall, a good weekend in the Sun Belt Conference.
While Louisiana (1-0 had the week off, the league went 6-3, including four wins over fellow G5 programs. Three of those wins came against Conference USA schools. The three losses were all road losses to P5 schools.
ULM 21, SOUTHERN MISS 20--Caleb Evans threw for 165 and a pair of touchdowns as the Warhawks (2-0) were victorious in Hattiesburg. Cortez Cisco, Jr. put the icing on the cake with a late interception in the final minute to preserve the win.
APP STATE 45, CHARLOTTE 9--Quarterback Zach Thomas threw for three scores and ran for a fourth as the Mountaineers (1-1) defeated the 49ers in the first ever meeting between the two schools. Thomas was perfect on the night, going 14-14 passing.
GEORGIA SOUTHERN 34, UMASS 13--Shai Wertz threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score as the Eagles (2-0) took the win in Statesboro. Wertz accounted for 237 of Georgia Southern's 488 yards.
COASTAL CAROLINA 47, UAB 24--Kilton Anderson threw for two scores and Marcus Outlow ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns as the Chanticleers (1-1) scored the big win despite being a home underdog. The Chants' defense pitched a shutout in the second half.
TROY 59, FLORIDA A&M 7--Quarterback Kaleb Barker threw for four touchdowns and ran for another in Troy's (1-1) lopsided win. The Troy defense forced four turnovers that led to four scores in the game.
TEXAS STATE 36, TEXAS SOUTHERN 20--Defense and special teams helped the Bobcats (1-1) to their first win as James Sherman booted five field goals and A. J. Krawczyk returned a fumble 82 yards for a touchdown. Willie Jones III accounted for 342 yards in total offense.
#! ALABAMA 57, ARKANSAS STATE 7--Bama took a 40-0 halftime lead and rolled up 599 yards in total offense in the rout of the Red Wolves (1-1). Justice Hansen was 15-36 for 140 yards and a score, while Warren Wand rushed for 60 yards on eleven carries.
NORTH CAROLINA STATE 41, GEORGIA STATE 7---Ryan Finley threw for 370 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Wolfpack to the win. Destin Coates gave the Panthers (1-1) an early 7-0 lead with an eight yard touchdown run.
OKLAHOMA STATE 55, SOUTH ALABAMA 13--Evan Orth got his first career start at QB for the Jaguars (0-2) and completed 14-25 passes for 119 yards. But Taylor Cornelius threw for 428 yards for Oklahoma State to lead the rout.
