Gerrit Cole Sets Astros Strikeout Record

A 40-year old record fell last night in Seattle as Gerrit Cole continued his dominance over the Mariners this season. He pitched seven innings of shutout ball while allowing just two hits, no walks and struck out 14 batters. On his 12th strikeout of the ballgame to begin the seventh against M's rookie Kyle Lewis Cole struck out his 314th batter of the season, breaking J.R. Richard's record of 313 strikeouts in a season.

The Astros won the game 3-0 but Gerrit Cole was and has been the story all season long as he improved to 19-5 on the season with a 2.52 ERA.

He would be the runaway leader for the Cy Young Award if it weren't for his teammate Justin Verlander who has been magnificent in his own right. JV's sporting a 20-6 record with 288 strikeouts and a 2.53 ERA.

Something else more impressive when it comes to Gerrit Cole has been his mastery during the second half of the season as he's 12-0 since the All-Star break.

In addition, he also owns the Mariners this season as well. In 28 innings against them this season he's struck out 50 batters and walked only one while pitching to a 1.29 ERA.

It'll be interesting to see who comes away with the hardware when it's all said and done. However, I know both of them would give up a Cy Young in order to win a World Series and that's what the Astros are focused on.
