Cajuns’ Bats Stay Quiet, Fall to Nicholls, 3-1
The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns continued to struggle at the plate Tuesday night, falling to Nicholls State 3-1 at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux, LA.
Louisiana (1-2( didn't get its first hit until two out in the seventh on a sharp single up the middle and didn't get a runner past first base until Pinero doubled home Steven Sensley with two out in the ninth.
Mike Hanchar (1-0) stymied the Cajuns through the first seven innings, allowing just one hit and one walk, striking out nine. Daniel Goff pitched a scoreless eighth and Adam Tarver pitched the ninth fir his first save, despite allowing the Cajuns'only run.
"As crazy as this sounds, if we don't have two (wild pitches) and hit a batter, we win the game 1-0. While we're still trying to find ourselves at the plate, we have to do the little things in order to win. We basically gave them all their runs," head coach Tony Robichaux said.
The Colonels (2-2) got a run in the first inning off redshirt freshman Jack Burk (0-1) when Joey Morales singled with one out and Kyle Knauth walked. Burk's first wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Burk got Gabe Teer on a called third strike but uncorked another wild pitch to score Morales.
Nicholls got a run in the fourth off reliever Chris Charpentier when Gavin Wehby singled with one out. Charpentier struck out Ethan Valdez for the second out, but walked the next two batters to load the bases, then hit Quade Smith with a pitch to force in a run.
Nicholls' final run came in the seventh when true freshman Hayden Erbe hit Smith with one out and Smith took third on a wild pickoff attempt. He scored on a wild pitch.
Four Cajuns' pitchers allowed just five hits and two earned runs, striking out eleven.
Louisiana travels to Sam Houston State for a three game series this weekend. Game one is Friday at 6:30.
