#1 LSU Dominates #4 Georgia To Win SEC Championship
#1 LSU took an early 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter of the SEC Championship Game, and never looked past, dominating #4 Georgia by the score of 37-10.
With the victory, LSU improved to 13-0, won the SEC, and gave the College Football Playoff Committee something to think about.
While LSU is #1 in the Coaches and AP Poll, the College Football Playoff Committee has them ranked #2 behind Ohio State. The Buckeyes defeated Wisconsin 34-21 tonight in Big 10 Championship Game.
Could the Tigers move up to #1? They certainly have a strong resume for it.
"I've told the team it doesn't matter," said LSU coach Ed Orgeron. "It don't matter where they rank us, where they tell us to go. We've got to win the next game. That's all that matters."
Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow, the overwhelming favorite to win the Heisman Trophy next Saturday, completed 28 passes on 38 attempts, for 349 yards and 4 touchdowns. Simply put, he was sensational.
He added 11 rushes for 41 yards, and even tallied a reception, catching his own deflected passes, then ran 16 yards for a first down.
"I feel like a Louisiana native," Burrow said after the win when accepting the SEC Championship Game MVP award.
Burrow added another Heisman moment to his resume in the 3rd quarter, shaking off several Georgia pass rushers in the backfield, rolling to his right, throwing a bomb to Justin Jefferson for a gain of 71 yards.
“If that play doesn’t win the Heisman, I don’t know what does," said Tigers center Lloyd Cushenberry.
Jefferson led all receivers with 115 yards on 7 catches and a score.
The Tigers offense racked up 481 total yards against the 4th ranked defense in the country.
As impressive as LSU's offense was against a tough Bulldogs defense, the Tigers defense made a statement, holding Georgia's offense in check.
"We just couldn't make enough plays tonight," Georgia coach Kirby Smart noted. "I give LSU a ton of credit. That is a really good football team, and we knew that coming in. We were going to have to play well. We were going to have to make explosive plays. We were unable to do that."
LSU's next game will be their first in a College Football Playoff.
The CFB Playoff Committee announces their 4 playoff teams tomorrow at 11:15 am on ESPN.
The College Football Playoffs take place on December 28th, where the Tigers will play in either Glendale, Arizona, or back in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta where they just wrapped up the SEC Championship.
