Vanessa Soto Talks UL Softball & Her Career

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun softball team #6-overall national seed, will take on the 11th-seeded Arizona Wildcats in a best-of-three game Super Regional series this weekend at Lamson Park.

To get you ready for the very first Super Regional Regional ever played in Lafayette, La., we reached out to some former UL greats, to not only preview the big series, but also take a look back at some special postseason memories.

Former UL second baseman Vanessa Soto was a guest on “Thinking Out Loud” on Tuesday.

Soto, a product of Mount Carmel High School in San Diego, California, played only one season for the Cajuns, but what a season it was. The left-handed hitting second baseman was an integral part of the 2008 Women’s College World Series team.

Prior to her time at UL, Soto was a three-year starter at LSU, where she was a second team All-Louisiana selection in 2005, as well as a first team All-Louisiana selection in 2006.

Ironic, but Soto actually had the game-winning RBI against Louisiana, a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning, to win the NCAA Regional championship in 2006 in Baton Rouge.

In 2008, after originally thinking that she wasn't going to play softball in her senior season, she transferred to UL, and helped the Cajuns make their magical run to Oklahoma City.

Soto hit a .333 with nine home runs and 67 runs batted in, and hit a couple of memorable postseason home runs, including a homer against Houston, in the final game of the 2008 Super Regional series, to give them an early lead, and some much-needed momentum.

She may have only spent one year in a Cajun uniform, but Soto's impact will likely last forever. She brought leadership, toughness, and uncanny clutch hitting to a team that seemed only that one player away from making that special run.

UL was a great for for Soto, and she was a great fit for UL. It was one of those things where it turned out to be a storybook season for both.
