Streaky shooting cost the Cajuns in Mobile, as South Alabama handed Garry Brodhead’s women their second loss in three days.

Both teams got off to a hot start, but the Cajuns hit a couple different cold spells in the game. At the end of the first quarter, they missed eight of their last ten shots. The same thing happened in the third quarter, where they only hit two of their final fourteen attempts from the floor. Closing out quarters was an issue in the 59-68 loss, but it was an off-night offensively all around.

The Cajuns went 2-12 from beyond the arc, and they ended up shooting 31% (22-69 FG) as a team. Keke Veal shouldered the majority of the load again with 26 points (giving her 60 in two games), and she moved into sixth all time with her 263rd career assist as a Cajun. The rest of the team only shot 28% (13-45 FG) though, and South Alabama shot 46% as a team and hit six of their eleven shots from deep. The math simply didn’t add up in the Cajuns’ favor.

Brodhead’s team battled all the way back to within four points in the final ninety seconds of the game, but they also battled inconsistent whistles all throughout the game.

“It’s tough, going from one game to another knowing how to play,” Brodhead said carefully, trying not to get fined. “It’s just the inconsistency all year. I’m not going to blame it on anybody. It’s been like that all year, win or lose.”

Two Cajuns (Veal, Quinn) fouled out of the game, and several players dealt with foul trouble the entire game. If Brodhead knew how the officials were going to call the games, he could try to prepare his team a little better. It makes sense, but coach still has to be careful with his words when it comes to the Sun Belt offices sending him letters in the mail.

To end on a bright note, Simone Fields continued her progression in the paint with a 14 point-12 rebound double-double. In a game where Kia Wilridge only made four of her twelve shots, the contribution in the post was almost enough to get the Cajuns a win.

Only two games left on the Cajuns schedule to protect their three seed for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. Just think, March starts this Tuesday…
