Greenies Take Control Late, Trip Cajuns 5-3

Grant Brown's double on a misplayed fly ball in the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie and the Tulane Green Wave went on to take a 5-3 win over the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns Tuesday night at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans.

Grant Witherspoon singled to lead off the seventh against Cajuns' reliever Jevin Huval (0-1).  Huval struck out the next two hitters but Brown hit a liner to left field that went over the head of Kennon Fontenot,, who had come in on the ball.  Witherspoon scored to give Tulane a 3-2 lead.

The Green Wave (8-4) padded the lead on a two run homer by Jeremy Montalbano off reliever Eric Carter in the eighth, making the score 5-2.

The Cajuns got a run in the ninth on a double inside the third base bag by Stefan Trosclair, but reliever Trevor Simms (3-0) got Dylan Poncho to fly out to end the game.

The game was a pitcher's duel between starters Evan Guillory for Louisiana and Ross Massey for Tulane, with the Cajuns breaking on top in the fifth inning.  With two out, Fontenot got his first hit of the season, Joe Robbins singled and Brenn Conrad delivered Fontenot with a base hit and a 1-0 Cajuns' lead.

Guillory, after giving up three hits in the first two innings, retired twelve straight hitters before walking Montalbano with two out in the sixth.  Lex Kaplan then belted a two run homer into the wind in right center to give the Wave a 2-1 lead.

The Cajuns (8-5) tied the game in the seventh when Robbins collected his third hit of the  night and was sacrificed to second by Conrad.  Trosclair was hit by a pitch and catcher Jake Rogers pickoff throw at first went awry, allowing Robbins to score and tie the game at two apiece.

Guillory pitched six innings, giving up just four hits and the two earned runs.  Massey matched him, going six innings, allowing eight hits and just one earned run.  Simms pitched the final three innings, giving up one run on one hits with five strikeouts.

Robbins had three hits to pace the Cajuns, while Conrad added a pair of singles.  Kaplan had two hits for Tulane, who matched the Cajuns with nine hits in the contest.

The Cajuns open Sun Belt Conference play with a three game series at Troy beginning Friday at 6pm.
