Georgia Southern Nips Cajun Women, 63-60
The Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team dropped the first leg of their two game Georgia swing, falling to Georgia Southern 63-60 at the Hanner Fieldhouse in Statesboro Thursday night.
In a game of runs, Louisiana (11-8, 5-5 Sun Belt) fell behind 13-1 early but battled back with an 11-1 run of its own to trail by just two points, 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.
The Cajuns took a 25-19 lead in the second period, but the Eagles (9-12, 5-5) then went on a 19-3 run to lead by ten at the half.
But Louisiana caught up on a 12-2 run in the third quarter, tying the game at 40 late in the third quarter and led 53-50 after Malachi Seraphin-Williams hit a pair of free throws with 4:47 left. Back to back triples by the Eagles gave Georgia Southern a 56-50 lead with 3:44 to play and the Eagles never trailed again. The Cajuns had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds, but Jaylyn Gordon's three point attempt was off the mark as the game ended.
Seraphin-Williams had a career high 15 points for the Cajuns, but she was the only player in double figures as the Cajuns shot just 31.3% for the game and just 5-23 from the three point line. Gordon and Jasmine Thomas, the Cajuns' two leading scorers, shot just 4-24 from the field.
Angel McGowan led Georgia Southern with 17 points, while Patrice Butler had a double double with 15 points and eleven rebounds.
Louisiana is back in action Saturday against Georgia State in Atlanta. Game time is 11:00am (CST) and can be heard on ESPN1420.
