
Georgia Schools Prevail in Wednesday Night Sun Belt Action
It was a good night for the state of Georgia Wednesday night in the Sun Belt Conference. Georgia Southern was a 75-65 winner over South Alabama, while Georgia State took care of Troy, 77-63. The games were played on Wednesday to set up Georgia Southern's game against Troy, which will be on ESPN2 Friday night.
GEORGIA SOUTHERN 75, SOUTH ALABAMA 65--Another solid night for senior guard Tookie Brown, who had 14 points and eight assists in the Eagles' win. It was also a coming out party for freshman guard Calvin Wishart, who had 14 points, seven rebounds and a pair of steals for Georgia Southern (15-10, 7-5). The Eagles used a 15-2 run to open a 15 point halftime lead. South Alabama (12-13, 5-7) closed to within four points several times in the second half but got no closer. Herb McGee led three in double figures with 18 points.
GEORGIA STATE 77, TROY 63--D'Marcus Simonds had a big night with 27 points, seven rebounds and six assists for Georgia State (17-8, 8-4 Sun Belt). Simonds became the all time school leader in made field goals in the win. Three other Panthers finished in double figures as the Panthers went on a 17-3 second half run to break open a tight game. Javan Johnson led Troy (11-13, 4-8) with 12 points as the Trojans played their third straight game without all-SBC performer Jordan Varnado.
