Christi Orgeron Named Finalist For Player of the Year Award

Outfielder Christi Orgeron, of the 7th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball team, has been selected as a Top 25 finalist for the 2012 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, which was announced by the Amateur Softball Association on Wednesday.

The award is designed to honor the top softball player in the country.

A fifth-year senior from New Orleans, Orgeron has already broken two UL and conference records this season. She set the UL and league standard for career doubles with 61, and also broke the UL and Sun Belt Conference career record for RBI's by blasting her third grand slam of the year against Georgia Tech on March 22.

Orgeron ranks seventh in NCAA history with 259 RBI's in her career, and leads the country and the Sun Belt this season with 65.

Orgeron, who was tabbed the Preseason Sun Belt Conference Play of the Year, was named a preseason All-American by ESPN.com.

She was recently named one of only ten finalists in the nation for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award..

Orgeron, an outfielder, currently leads the Sun Belt in slugging percentage (.811), RBI's (65), home runs (13) and total bases (99). She also ranks second in the league in runs scored (47), hits (48) and doubles (10).

This year’s Top 25 is comprised of 13 seniors, seven juniors, four sophomores, and one freshman.

The three finalists will be announced May 23, while the winner will be revealed on May 29, prior to the start of the NCAA WCWS in Oklahoma City.
