Burk, Perrin Combine to Shut Out Georgia State 2-0
There haven't been too many pitchers' duels on Friday night for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns this season. But there was on this night.
Jack Burk and Austin Perrin combined on a five hit shutout as Louisiana outdueled Georgia State's Hunter Gaddis 2-0 at M. L. "Tigue" Moore Field at Russo Park.
Burk (3-2) went the first five innings allowing just two hits. He did not walk a man and struck out six. Perrin got his second save, working the final four innings, giving up three hits with a walk and five strikeouts.
"If they're going to be stingy, you have to be stingy too," head coach Tony Robichaux said after the game." That's the only way to beat a buffalo (Gaddis) like that. He's good, man."
Gaddis (1-7) threw a complete game, allowing just one earned run in a 100 pitch effort. He hit one batter and struck out eleven. Gaddis, the league's preseason pitcher of the year, has allowed a grand total of seven earned runs in his last four starts.
The Cajuns (23-28, 11-14 Sun Belt) got on the board in the second inning when Orynn Veillon led off with a double and stole second and third. Handsome Monica delivered the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly.
Louisiana got the insurance run in the fifth when Brennan Breaux was hit by a pitch and Tremaine Spears doubled. Breaux scored on a passed ball..
Georgia State (14-36, 5-20) only had multiple runners on base twice. The Panthers got two on in the first inning on an error and a ground rule double by Jake Corso. But Hayden Cantrelle made a diving catch of Brandon Bell's liner and Burk struck out Chase Frady to end the inning. In the eighth, Griffen Cheney blooped a single to center with two outs and Corso walked. Bell's fly ball to left field ended that threat.
Two Cajuns continued their hitting streaks Friday. Veillon stretched his to a season high 15 games, while Daniel Lahare hit safely for the ninth straight game.
The two teams will play game two of their series tomorrow at 4:00 pm. Brandon Young will get the start for the Cajuns, while Georgia State will counter with lefty Tyler Koch.
