Louisiana Ragin' Cajun first baseman Handsome Monica stepped up to the plate in the top of the 8th inning of a tie game, having just watched his teammate Orynn Veillon hit a two run jack over the left field wall.

Two pitches later, he did the same thing, giving the Cajuns a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Simply put, it was a tremendous baseball game on Tuesday night at the Shrine on Airline in Metarie as Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns topped the #14 LSU Tigers 6-5 at the annual Wally Pontiff Jr. Classic.

"I just went in there with the mindset of hitting the ball hard," said Monica after the win. "And I did the same thing Orynn did, even though his went a little farther.”

With a one run lead, sinker ball thrower Jacob Schultz entered in the 8th, fresh off his safe on Sunday, earning the win in relief.

UL built an early 3-0 lead, scoring 2 runs in the 2nd and using a delayed double steal in the 3rd for another run.

LSU evened the game at 3 in the 4th inning off a Cade Beloso 3 run homer, then scored 2 more in the 5th inning when the Cajuns had issues fielding.

“Their guy (Beloso) got a breaking ball that we didn’t bury and got it out of the ball park on us,” UL head coach Tony Robichaux said. “That was a nice swing. We kicked two balls in an inning. We could have kept those two runs off the board, but we let them get ahead of us."

Following two scoreless innings in the 6th and 7th, Veillon got the fireworks started with his 2 run homer, before Monica stepped up to the plate for an encore.

The victory pulls the Cajuns to 20-20 on the season, and is their third consecutive victory over the Tigers (24-14) after defeating LSU twice last season.

Next up, Louisiana travels to Arlington for a three game Sun Belt Conference series against UT-Arlington set for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. All 3 games can be heard on News Talk 96.5 KPEL, kpel965.com and the KPEL News app.
