A former UL Cajun head baseball coach, who was also a popular high school football coach in the Acadiana area for many years, passed away over the weekend.

Bobby Banna died on Saturday at the age of 84.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Banna graduated from McNeese St., prior to becoming an assistant football coach at Catholic High in New Iberia, helping the Panthers to a state championship in 1962

In 1968, Banna moved to then USL, serving as offensive line coach for the football team, as well as head baseball coach.

As the head baseball coach, Banna served as Ron Guidry's coach, while guiding the team to a 59-47 record from 1968-1971.

In 1970, Banna was named the Gulf States Conference Coach of the Year.

Banna left USL in 1974, to become the head football coach at Fatima, prior to serving as an assistant coach at Acadiana High School, and then finally the head coach at Comeaux,

In 1997, following 35 years of coaching, Banna retired.

Services will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church on Wednesday, August 1 with visitation from 11 am to time of mass at 1pm.
