The problem with termites is that most of us don't realize we have a problem with them until it's too late. By the time we notice their presence, they've already done thousands of dollars in damage to our homes and other structures. There are things you can do to prevent them from costing you and your family thousands of dollars.

From now to roughly the end of May we are in termite swarming season. The swarms usually begin about dusk and will stay active until 10 or 10:30 in the evening. During that time it's suggested that you keep your outside lights off. The lights attract the insects and since the lights are attached to your home, you can see the conundrum right?

Other suggestions to keep termites at bay is to have a professional exterminator treat your home. There are many do it yourself kits and home chemical compounds you can try but trust me when the investment is as large as your home you want the treatment done by a professional.

Another tip we can offer has to do with mulch and the way you have it spread in your flowerbeds. If those beds are adjacent to your home, you'll want to make sure the mulch does not contact your home directly. You will want to put a buffer of gravel or rocks, about six to eight inches wide between your home and the mulch.

Also, check outside pipes for leaks and moisture. Termites, like all pests, are often in search of food and water. A leaky pipe and the wood in your home would make a great habitat for these pests. So, stop the leaks and stop the termites.

If you have other questions about termites and pest control we have an expert for you to consult. You can submit your questions right here and they will get back with you promptly.
