The New Orleans Saints had high hopes going into the 1984 season, after just missing the playoffs in 1983 with an 8-8 record, which tied an all-time franchise best.

The Saints acquired quarterback Richard Todd prior to the season, and even traded for running back Earl Campbell, in season, putting optimism at an all-time high.

After a 27-24 Monday Night Football in week 12 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers the Saints were looking good, at 6-6, before dropping 3 of their last 4 games, to finish 7-9, and miss the playoffs.

Todd was a disappointment, throwing only 11 touchdowns, while being intercepted 19 times, while Campbell showed obvious signs of being well past his prime.
