Chicago White Sox pitcher Chris Sale and Detroit Tigers' designated hitter Victor Martinez exchanged words on Wednesday, prompting the respective benches to clear.

In the bottom half of the third inning, Sale struck out Martinez, and then appeared to tip his hat toward the outfield.

Later, with one out in the bottom of the sixth and Chicago up 1-0, Sale's first pitch to Martinez hit him. Martinez walked slowly to first, and the two started having words, with Sale appearing to point out toward center field in an agitated fashion.

Word is that Sale was upset because he thought someone with binoculars was relaying signs to Martinez.

The Tigers went on to win, 6-1.

That Detroit win, coupled with a 1-0 loss by the Seattle Mariners to the Toronto Blue Jays, clinched a postseason berth for the Tigers.
