Napier Adds UTSA’s Toney to Defensive Staff
If you've been paying attention to what new Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns head coach Billy Napier is doing in putting together his coaching staff, the latest addition won't come as a surprise.
Toney, like the three previous hires announced by Napier, has extensive recruiting experience in Texas and Louisiana, having been on the staffs of Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana prior to joining Frank Wilson's staff at UTSA prior to the 2016 season.
UTSA' s defense was one of the nation's best this past season, ranking seventh in the FBS in total defense with only 287.8 yards allowed per game. The Roadrunners were eighth in the nation in scoring defense (17.0 ppg).
Toney will reunite with new Defensive Coordinator Karl Scott, as the two coached together at Southeastern Louisiana, and helped lead the Lions to back to back FCS Playoff appearances. In addition to his duties as safeties coach, Toney also coordinated the Lions' special teams in 2014.
In making the announcement, Napier said:
"Today we made a great hire," Napier said. "In Patrick Toney we have acquired another quality football coach and recruiter. He will be relentless in his approach with our players and on the recruiting trail. He and Karl (Scott) have a prior relationship, and that will help with our transition. The Ragin' Cajuns got better today!"
The Poway, CA native spent four years as an assistant coach in the California high school ranks prior to taking the position in Hammond.
