If you ask a group of people what their favorite sports movie is, you'll have many who say "Field of Dreams."

One of the characters in that classic Kevin Costner/James Earl Jones movie was Dr. Archibald "Moonlight" Graham, who played in one major league game as a defensive replacement and never got to bat.  In the movie, that character was played by Burt Lancaster.

According to an article in "The Sporting News",  the movie took a couple of liberties with regard to dates, but "Moonlight" Graham did exist.  He did play in one game for the New York Giants.  And, when the game ended, he was in the on deck circle.  He was sent back to the minors the next day and never got into another major league game.

In real life, Graham did, in fact, become a doctor and practiced medicine in Minnesota.

110 years ago today, "Moonlight" Graham played in his only game.
