Matt Flynn Released By Oakland Raiders

Former LSU quarterback Matt Flynn was recently demoted to third string by the Oakland Raiders. Today, he's no string, as Oakland released the maligned signal caller.

Sports illustrated was first to report the release.

Oakland acquired Flynn, 28, in an offseason trade with the Seahawks, sending Seattle a 2014 fifth-round draft pick and a conditional pick in 2015. The Raiders hoped Flynn would be their starter, and paid him $6.5 million in salary.

However, Flynn disappointed, getting beat by Terrelle Pryor for the starting gig. Pryor suffered a concussion in Week 3, giving Flynn an opportunity versus the Redskins in Week 4. Against the Redskins, Flynn threw a pick 6, fumbled twice, and was sacked 7 times. He was then demoted to third string QB behind undrafted rookie Matthew McGloin last week. Today, Oakland decided Flynn was not part of their future.

Flynn is now a free agent, and could be an attractive backup option to several teams. He spent the first 4 years of his career backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. In limited backup duty, Flynn looked good enough to earn a three-year deal and over $10 million guaranteed from the Seattle Seahawks 2012. However, he was beaten out by then rookie Russell Wilson for the starting job.
