Sean McDonough has been hired as the new play-by-play voice of Monday Night Football, replacing Mike Tirico, ESPN confirmed today.

McDonough becomes only the 5th man in history to serve as play-by-play man for the iconic MNF, joining a short list that includes Tirico, Al Michaels, Frank Gifford and Keith Jackson. He is a worthy choice.

McDonough's resume is loaded, having worked the World Series, NCAA Final Four, the College World Series and the Olympic Games, while doing play-by-play of college football, NFL football, college basketball, tennis, college baseball, NHL, Major League baseball and many other college sports.

Most recently, he served as lead play-by-play voice for ABC's college football Saturday afternoon games, as well as ESPN's Big Monday ACC basketball games. He'll continue to do college basketball, in addition to his MNF duties.

McDonough has a well balanced approach to calling the action. Wit and humor are evident, but only in the right moments. His voice stands out, and he knows what a moment calls for. When to be quiet. When to be loud. When to be excited. When to dial it back. He rarely makes errors, and understands how to share a booth.

He'll be sharing one on Monday nights with Jon Gruden, a larger than life personality who will complement McDonough's sharp approach.
