With several injuries at point guard and the season tipping off tomorrow, the New Orleans Pelicans signed Ish Smith (pictured left).

The one year deal does not become fully guaranteed until January 10th.

Based on the future health of the Pelicans, Smith may not be on the team for the entire season.

Currently, starting point guard Jrue Holiday is on a 15 to 17 minute restriction due to a previous stress reaction in his right leg.

Tyreke Evans, who head coach Alvin Gentry said would play primarily at point guard, is out for the next six to seven weeks after undergoing athroscopic knee surgery, and point guard Norris Cole suffered a high ankle sprain two weeks ago and a timetable for his return is currently undetermined.

With the shortage at point guard, the Pelicans signed veteran Nate Robinson last week. He and Smith will take minutes at point guard until Cole and or Evans returns.

Smith, 6'0, 175 pounds, has played in 246 career NBA games with 8 different franchises. His career per game averages are as follows: 3.6 points, 2.3 assists, 1.5 rebounds, 12.3 minutes.

New Orleans begins their season tomorrow night against the defending champion Golden State Warriors. Tip-off is set for 9:30.
