Final Round for Blue Trash Can Pickup for Lafayette

In recent months the city of Lafayette and unincorporated areas have had garbage services switched from Republic Services to Acadiana Waste Services after the council voted for a contract for that provider.

During the roll-out of the new service, there were some hiccups for some customers with knowing all the details about the new service.

We heard complaints about residents who did not receive a recycling cart. The new company, Acadiana Waste Services, decided only to drop off a recycling can if a customer asked for it.

How Can I Recycle?

If you are a resident of the city of Lafayette then you can use a recycling cart to recycle items. The recycling cans were not sent to each address.

Why Do I Have to Return a Cart I Paid For?

When you purchased the additional car with Republic Waste Services years ago, it was not actually a purchase, it was a rental fee. Some customers have been confused about that, but you must return the cart.

The same applies to our new waste service. The $90 you pay for the additional cart is a rental fee for the entire time you will be using the cart.

Some residents did not have their blue carts picked up from their homes as many customers had the collection day for waste change from the old company. That led to some confusion as some people put the old bins out and trash was only being collected in the new black and red cans.

Trash collection by Acadiana Waste Services began on Monday, October 30, 2023. The old servicer, Republic Waste Services, ceased having a contract with Lafayette Consolidated Government.

Will I Get a Chance to Get My Blue Cart Picked Up? 

Five days next week from Monday, January 22 through Friday, January 26, is the final time when your old blue cart should be placed at your curb for it to be picked up.

According to officials if your blue cart is empty they are asking you to put it on its side at the curb. It needs to be out of the way of anything that could come into contact with it. Make sure there is three feet of space around the blue can.

If you fail to have the blue cart at your curb between Monday and Friday of next week then it will be up to you to have to have it removed.
