Fun at the Office – From the Bird’s Nest
Football season has begun.
The New Orleans Saints played their first exhibition game on Friday. They lost. But there were no reported suicides after the game's conclusion.
The Cajuns open their season against Mississippi State in the Superdome on August 31. Ticket sales are picking up.
LSU opens with Georgia Southern on the same date. Eagles' quarterback Shai Werts got some pub locally with news of his arrest for speeding and possession of what turned out to be bird poop. He'll pay the speeding ticket. Charges have been dropped and he's totally reinstated. The news did not change the fact LSU is a four touchdown favorite.
But here at 1749 Bertrand Drive, all that can wait.
There are quite a few passionate baseball fans in these here parts. And, everyone here has something to be excited about.
Steve Peloquin, Cody Junot and Kevin Foote are all Astros fans. They are comfortably in first place in the AL West and are fighting for home field advantage in the American League with...
The New York Yankees, which pleases Steve Wiley of 99.9 KTDY greatly. Steve is back at work after dealing with some health issues and the native of New York State has plenty of reasons to have a healthy heartbeat. His Bronx Bombers have lengthened their lead in the AL East and have a shot at the best record in the AL.
Brad Topham and 97.3 The Dawg's Jude Walker (the kid is not my son) are fans of the Atlanta Braves. Los Bravos made it to the playoffs with a young team a year ago and they lead the NL East with an exciting team. Ronald Acuna, Jr. has a chance for 40 homers and 40 steals. Someone told me that's pretty good.
Even Scott Prather and Greg Larnerd are excited. Their usually hapless Mets have won 15 of their last 17 and find themselves just one game out of the wild card race. The addition of Marcus Stroman has given the Citi Field boys a formidable pitching rotation.
As for me, a lifelong Dodgers fan, all is well. The Dodgers easily have the best record in the National League and are fighting the Yanks and 'Stros for the #1 overall record in all of baseball. Their top three of Hyun-Jin Ryu, Clayton Kershaw and Walker Buhler are as good as any, and yes, that includes Houston.
Right now, Prather and Larnerd are scoreboard watching each and every day. The Mets (61-57) are third in the NL East right now. They still need to win at a high clip if they're going to make the playoffs.
Top and Jude are paying close attention as well. The Braves (70-50) have a six game lead and look to be in good shape. But they are one slump away from throwing the NL East into a tizzy.
The Yankees, Astros and Dodgers all have commanding leads in their respective divisions. New York has a nine game lead over Tampa Bay, while the Astros are ten up on Oakland. The Dodgers? They are a whopping 18.5 games ahead of Arizona. If they play just .500 ball the rest of the way, they'll win 100 games.
As August turns into September, the rhetoric here in the office will get ramped up. The term "little team" and "donkeys" will be used by more people than Stevie P. And, if the Mets hold up their part of the bargain, the postseason will be pretty intense.
This is fun.
