Two Acadiana area teams brought home state championships on the first day of the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Prep Classic on Thursday.

The Catholic High-New Iberia Panthers and the Lafayette Christian Academy Knights won state titles in their respective classifications at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

CHNI won the Division III state championship in the Select Division, defeating the Notre Dame Pioneers, 33-16, after LCA won the Division IV state crown, blanking Ascension Catholic, 10-0.

After falling to Notre Dame, 37-0 in Week 4 of the season, CHNI got revenge, in a big way, defeating the top-seeded Pioneers, 33-16.

The Panthers got on the scoreboard first, going on a 78-yard touchdown drive to take a quick lead.

Catholic High never looked back, leading 19-3 at the half, and 33-10 after the third quarter, as they went on to capture their first state championship since 1962.

Jadan Stokes and Ben Landry paved the way for the Panthers, combining for 262 rushing yards, along with three touchdowns, on 26 carries.

Meanwhile, Lafayette Christian Academy used a stingy defense to blank Ascension Catholic, 10-0, to win the first state title in the 5-year history of the program.

After a scoreless first half, Colin LaHaye kicked a 43-yard field goal to give the Knights a 3-0 lead late in the third quarter.

The LCA defense fittingly put things away in the fourth quarter, when Calib Watts intercepted a pass and returned it 46 yards for a touchdown, nailing down the title.

LCA quarterback Errol Rogers, Jr. passed for 94 yards, while rushing for another 51.

The Knights held Ascension Catholic to 98 yards of total offense.

The other game on Thursday had West St. John winning the Class 1A state title, defeating Kentwood, 20-14.

Play in day two of the three day event gets underway at noon on Friday, with the Class 2A title game, featuring Welsh and St. Helena, followed by De La Salle and University Lab in Division II championship game at 3:30 pm, and then 3A title game, featuring Richwoood and West Feliciana.

The Division I, Class 4A, and Class 5A championships will be decided on Saturday.
