Former San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Mike Budenholzer was named the new head coach of the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday.

The 43-year old Budenholzer, who has been an assistant with San Antonio for the past 17 seasons, will continue to coach on the staff of Gregg Popovich through the NBA finals.

Budenholzer began his career with the Spurs as the video coordinator for two years before being named an assistant coach.

The Hawks were coached by Larry Drew last season, when they went 44-38, and were eliminated in the first round of the NBA Playoffs by the Indiana Pacers.

Drew, who is a candidate for the open head coaching position with the Milwaukee Bucks, went 128-102 in three seasons with the Hawks.
