This Day in Sports: Fernando Tatis Makes MLB History

On this date 19 years ago, a young up and comer in Major League Baseball, a third baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals. Fernando Tatis did something no Major League player has ever done before or since.

At the tender age of 24 years old, in a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium, in the third inning facing Chan Ho Park with the bases loaded, on a 2-0 count he tattooed a ball to left-field for a grand slam, and a 4-2 Cardinal lead.

Later on in the same inning, with Park still pitching, and laboring on the mound, Tatis walked to the plate, again with the bases loaded. From there it would be history, a 3-2 helicopter breaking ball from Park was deposited into the left-field pavilion and an exclamation mark on an 11 run inning for the Cards. In the process it was history made, as Tatis was and still is the only Major League player to ever hit two grand slams, off the same pitcher, in the same inning.

He would go 2-5 that day at the plate with 8 RBI's and two runs scored. The Cardinals would also go on to get the victory that night 12-5 over the Dodgers.

Simply, history for Fernando Tatis who would spend 11 years in the Big Leagues and amass 113 home-runs, none bigger than those two on that night on April 23rd, 1999 at Dodger Stadium.
