Ryan Leaf Wants Jail, Gives Sad Statement To Parents
Today marked another sad chapter in the life of Ryan Leaf. The former San Diego Chargers quarterback and All-time NFL bust was sentenced to a drug treatment facility today, but judging from his sad statements in court, Leaf seemed to want prison time.
Sitting in prison garb with an unkempt beard and shaggy hair, Leaf had several things to say to the Great Falls, Montana courtroom. The Great Falls Tribune was there to cover the story, and below are three things Leaf had to say. His parents were not in attendance, as Leaf instructed his lawyer to ask them to not show up to his court date.
"They (his parents) believe I've held them for ransom for 36 years, and I don't understand why I should have to do that any more."
"I'm lazy, and dishonest and selfish. These were behaviors I had before my addiction kicked in."
"Five to 10 years of Ryan-free drama for my family, this community — particularly for this nation — would be pure bliss for people."
Leaf His Own Worst Critic At Sentencing For Drug, Burglary Crimes
Calling his time in jail a "sancutary," and commenting how everyone would be at peace if he remained there, suggests that Leaf's time in a cell has given him much time to reflect.
However, the Montana Judge sentenced Leaf a five-year commitment to the Montana Department of Corrections, forcing him to go to drug rehab facilities. Barring a major setback, Leaf will avoid prison time. Of course, he sad story of Ryan Leaf has shown us many setbacks, not to mention he insisted today he might prefer imprisonment.
Leaf pleaded guilty last month to burglary and drug possession. The charge stemmed from two arrests in three days between March 30 and April 2.
