The sad cause of former Heisman Trophy winning running back Rashaan Salaam's death has been revealed.

Salaam's mother, Khalada, told USA TODAY the believed cause of death is suicide.

Salaam was found dead Monday night in a park in Boulder, Colorado with a suicide note. He was 42 years old.

Salaam won the Heisman Trophy in 1994 after an incredible season at Colorado, scoring a school record 24 touchdowns on 2,055 yards on an 11-1 team.

In 1995, the Chicago Bears selected him with the 21st pick of the 1st round.

He rushed for 1,074 yards and 10 touchdowns his rookie season before consistent injuries ended his NFL career prematurely after several seasons.

He played in the XFL and attempted an NFL comeback in 2003 with the San Francisco 49ers, but did not make the 53 man roster.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Salaam's family and friends at this time.
