Crowley Suspect Booked on Rape Charge after Shocking Series of Events

Crowley, LA (KPEL News) - A Louisiana man is charged with first degree rape after a shocking series of events.

Crowley Police say 37-year-old Desmond Woods had been booked on several criminal counts including:

• Attempted second degree murder
• Violation of a protective order
• Unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling
• Simple criminal damage to property
• Interfering with emergency communication

He bonded out on those charges and was released with an ankle monitoring system.

Crowley Police Chief Troy Hebert is working to provide more details about the case, but he echoed what nearly all law enforcement officers in south Louisiana have said. Jail space is incredibly limited, making it difficult to find space to house suspects when they are taken into custody. All agencies are working together to find solutions, and he says the problem is not limited to Louisiana. He knows of at least six states that are dealing with the same issues.

The best solution to the jail crisis is building more facilities for both adults and juveniles, which is expensive and would take years to complete.

Law enforcement must use all the tools at their disposal as suspects receive their due process. Ankle monitors is one of those tools. Unfortunately, they aren't fool-proof, as in the case of Woods.

While Woods was out of jail, he cut off his ankle monitor. When officials found out, they were able to locate and arrest him again on April 12.

In the course of questioning him once he was back in custody, they discovered that he had committed an act of first degree rape.

He was booked into the Acadia Parish jail. His bond on the rape charge alone is set at $350,000, with a total bond of $450,000.
