(KMDL-FM) America has a health issue. We, the people, are, for the most part, overweight and out of shape. That's a far cry from what we used to think of ourselves back in the 70s. Perhaps that is why the current Presidential Administration is bringing back the Presidential Fitness Test.

If you were still in school before the 2012-2013 school year, you probably have fond memories or terrifying nightmares of this open assault on your ability to be physical. The Presidential Fitness Test ended in 2013 under President Obama, but President Trump has signed an Executive Order that will bring the test back.

If you're unfamiliar with what is required to complete the Presidential Fitness Test, here is the thumbnail sketch. There is a one-mile run requirement, a shuttle run, sit-ups, pull-ups or push-ups, and the sit and reach flexibility test.

Why Are Certain Exercises Chosen for the Presidential Fitness Test?

The purpose of the one-mile run is to measure cardiovascular endurance. The shuttle run is a timed test of agility and speed. The sit-ups will assess core and abdominal strength. The pull-up or push-up portion will measure upper body strength. And the sit-and-reach evaluation will determine flexibility, especially in the hamstrings and lower back.

As you can see, Governor Jeff Landry is all about bringing the Presidential Fitness Test back. From all indications, and based on information we've received from neighboring states, Louisiana students should expect the test to become part of their health and physical education curriculum in the 2026-2027 school year.

When Will Louisiana Students Be Required to Take the Presidential Fitness Test?

In an article about neighboring Mississippi's plans to implement the tests, it was noted that each state and perhaps even each school district might have a say in which of the activities are included in the test and how often the testing would occur.

I do recall that back in the day, passing the test was a badge of honor among my peer group. And to be honest, I don't see any reason why most students wouldn't be able to complete most of, if not all of these requirements, with just a little extra effort.

And let's face it, Louisiana, we could all probably stand to move a little more.
