Thrilling Comeback: LSU Tigers Baseball Clinch 27th Regional Title
The LSU Tigers baseball team had to come from behind to beat Little Rock in the final game of the Baton Rouge Regional. Winning the program's 27th Regional Title, and setting up a Super Regional at Alex Box Stadium.
Dramatic Comeback Seals Regional Championship
Late on Monday night, the LSU Tigers won Game 7 of the Regional against Little Rock 10-6, who was the 4th (and final) seed in the bracket. The Tigers had to fight hard to pull that win off, because they were down by 4 runs at one point in the night.
How the Tigers Fought Back Against Little Rock
LSU took an early 1-0 lead in the 1st inning, but gave up 5 runs to Little Rock in the bottom of the 2nd inning. The Tigers went into the 3rd down by four, and were blanked in the third frame. LSU pitching held Little Rock to zero in the bottom of the 3rd, which became a theme after that point. LSU shrunk the lead to 1 run in the top of the 4th when they scored 3 runs.
The 5th inning started with a 5-4 Little Rock lead, and would stay that way until the top of the 6th where the Tigers scored a run to tie the game 5-5. The Tigers would score one in the top of the 7th to take a 6-5 lead. They would score another run in the 8th to extend the lead to 7-5, but would give up a run to Little Rock in the bottom of the 8th, narrowing it to a 7-6 lead. But that would be Little Rock's last run of the night. LSU would put up 3 in the top of the 9th to put up a 10-6 lead, and would shut down Little Rock in the bottom of the 9th to finish off the 10-6 win.
Ethan Frey's Heroics Spark LSU Offense
All night long it felt like LSU Designated Hitter Ethan Frey was not going to let the Tigers lose. He gave the Tigers the first inning lead by blasting a 1st inning home run. When he came back up in the 4th inning, the Tigers were down, and the bases were loaded. He lasered a shot to the opposite field, and cleared the bases to bring LSU within a run, 5-4, with Frey being responsible for all 4 Tigers runs at that point. Frey ended his night going 4-4 with two walks.
But LSU Catcher Luis Hernandez wasn't comfortable letting Frey have all the fun. So Hernandez decided to hit two home runs on Monday night. Hitting one in the 6th, and one in the 8th, collecting 3 RBIs, and putting the game into a tie in the 6th.
Jared Jones Comes Through in the Clutch
LSU's star hitter, Jared Jones, had been a little cool in the Regional. He was actually moved down in the lineup Monday night. But in the 9th inning, Jones hit a 2-run home run to extend the Tigers' lead.
LSU Pitching Performances: From Struggles to Dominance
Pitching was up-and-down for the Tigers Monday night. Starter/opener Zac Cowan had command issues, and ended up leaving the game in the 2nd inning. But before he left the game, he was responsible for 4 earned runs.
Casan Evans, a Freshman, came in next and was pretty dominant. Evans went 6 innings, giving up one run, and striking out 12 hitters.
Starting pitcher Anthony Eyanson came in late for the Tigers to serve as their ultimate closer. He gave up just 1 hit over 1 and 2/3 innings, striking out 3 hitters, and slamming the door for the Tigers.
Now, LSU will host a Super Regional series against West Virginia in Baton Rouge.
