Detroit Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez tore the medial meniscus in his left knee during recent workouts and will miss an undisclosed period of time.

While no official timetable for Martinez's return has been announced, some early speculation has the 36-year old missing at least 4-6 weeks.

A switch-hitter, Martinez hit a .335 last season, along with 32 home runs and 103 runs batted in, while finishing second in the American League Most Valuable Player Award voting.

Martinez, who signed a four-year, $68 million contract in the offseason with the Tigers, also suffered a torn ACL in his left knee back in 2012.
