Kent Desormeaux rode Exaggerator hard on the last leg, closing ground, but the favorite Nyquist held him off by one and a half lengths to win the 142nd Kentucky Derby.

Desormeaux, a native of Maurice, sought his 4th Kentucky Derby win Saturday, but the Hall of Fame Jockey needed another 25 yards to pass Nyquist.

"I thought we had him," said Keith Desormeaux, brother of Kent and trainer of Exxagerator. "I'll be damned if Nyquist didn't re-break when he felt us approach him. He's just a great champion."

From start to finish, Nyquist led the way, proving his 2-1 favorite betting line was spot on. The 2 year old colt is undefeated in 7 starts. Can anyone beat the champion?

"He was staggering there at the end as we approached but he re-broke again before the wire," added Keith Desormeaux. "There's no telling how good he is."

Exaggerator will get another shot at Nyquist in two weeks at the Preakness Stakes. Equestrians and horse racing fans are already buzzing for the next leg of the Triple Crown.
