Lafayette Drillers Flashback: Andrew Muhlstock

The Lafayette Drillers, a Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, called Lafayette, Louisiana their home for two years, from 1975-1976.

The Drillers, who played their home games at Clark Field, were co-champions of the Texas League in 1975 with the Midland Cubs, finishing 72-57, before going 58-76 in 1976, the last year of affiliated professional baseball in Lafayette.

A number of outstanding players, who eventually made it into Major League Baseball ranks played at Clark Field in 1975 & 1976, including five former Lafayette Driller players.

All summer long, we’re taking a look back at some of the former players for the Drillers.

Today, pitcher Andrew Muhlstock:

Muhlstock was a pitcher, primarily a reliever, for the Drillers during the 1976 season.

Born in New York City, New York, Muhlstock attended Teaneck High School, before moving on to college at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was named an Academic All-American in 1975, and later inducted into the school's Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977.

Muhlstock, who began his professional career shortly after his 1975 Academic All-American season ended, has the Penn baseball team's annual Most Valuable Player Award named after him.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Muhlstock, a right-hander, made minor league stops in Great Falls, Montana and Fresno, California before joining the Drillers in 1976 at the age of 21.

With Lafayette, Muhlstock pitched in 35 games in ’76, all but four in relief, going 8-4 with a 3.30 earned run average, and one save.

In 90 innings pitched, Muhlstock allowed 98 hits, 33 earned runs, and 38 walks, while striking out 87 hitters.

After his one-year stint in Lafayette, Muhlstock was traded to the Chicago Cubs' organization, and pitched in Midland, Texas in 1977 and then in Wichita, Kansas in 1978, before ending his professional career, having made it as high as the AAA level.

In four minor league seasons, Muhlstock compiled a 30-17 overall record, along with 13 saves, and a 3.43 ERA. over 128 appearances.

Today, Muhlstock is a very successful, and well-respected accountant in the New York/New Jersey area.
