LSU’s Angel Reese Taken By Chicago In WNBA Draft
The 2024 WNBA Draft is probably the most watched in league history. A pile of well known NCAA basketball stars were all set to be selected in the draft, including two of the biggest names in the game; Caitlin Clark of Iowa and Angel Reese of LSU.
Since the 2023 NCAA Women's Basketball National Championship Game, these two players have been linked. Clark was a supernova star in the making during that tournament. She has skills, swagger, and substance...all things that LSU's Reese has as well. During the tournament, both Clark and Reese let that swagger fly as they rolled through wins. When they got together in the Championship Game the swagger was turned up to 11, and with LSU pulling away late, Reese gave Clark some trash talk. Reese delivered some of the same gestures Clark had previously used in games, but the national media didn't see it that way.
Clark and Iowa got their revenge in the 2024 NCAA Tournament, when they eliminated LSU in the Elite Eight. Though Clark and her Iowa team didn't capture the National Championship, her star had already grown to unseen levels in the women's basketball world. In fact, Clark even appeared on Saturday Night Live prior to the WNBA Draft.
Once the WNBA Draft rolled around, it was a foregone conclusion that Clark would be the #1 overall pick. She was selected at #1 by the Indiana Fever. But Reese wasn't the #2 pick. In fact, she wasn't the third, fourth, or even fifth pick. She wasn't taken until the 7th overall pick. That's when she was selected by the Chicago Sky.
Stanford's Cameron Brink was the 2nd overall pick, going to the Los Angeles Sparks. The 3rd pick was also a Chicago Sky pick, and they took 6'7 South Carolina Center Kamilla Cardoso...meaning Reese will be a teammate of her SEC rival. But that also means the Chicago Sky have two of the most exciting young players in this draft.
However, now we get into the difficult part of the WNBA...do any of these draft picks actually get to make their teams? Over the last few years, even high draft picks don't make the team rosters out of training camp. So the idea of Reese and Cardoso playing together in Chicago might get some people interested, the team might not actually let it happen. We will just have to wait and see.
