Saints Sign Rookie Brock Rechsteiner, Son Of WWE Legend
The New Orleans Saints have grabbed the attention of both NFL fans, and pro wrestling fans this afternoon. Not because they've announced a luchador mask promotion, or because WWE will be giving back the Wrestlemania they stole from the city. But because they just signed an undrafted rookie to a contract...
But not just any rookie, the son of a Hall of Famer...a WWE Hall of Fame member.
The New Orleans Saints have signed Brock Rechsteiner
After their rookie minicamp, the Saints have started adding players to their official roster. One of the first they signed was Jackson State wide receiver Brock Rechsteiner, the son of WWE Hall of Fame member Scott Steiner.
Although he's been listed as a wide receiver, and technically played there at Jax State, the 6'2, 225 lbs 'genetic freak' might profile better as a tight end at the NFL level. But there's a lot of time before that position label actually matters.
Right now, what we know, is that Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis has simply announced that Rechsteiner has been signed by the franchise.
What Did Rechsteiner Do In College?
While at Jacksonville State, Rechsteiner played in 37 games over three seasons. He caught 53 total passes in his career, gaining 629 yards, for 8 touchdowns. But as some experts have pointed out, the Jacksonville State offense did not feature a downfield passing attack.
Even if the stats from college don't reflect it, Rechsteiner is a physical specimen. He has exceptional size, agility, and solid speed for his build. But again, he might be a better option at tight end in the NFL than a wide receiver...he's closer to Trey McBride than Chris Olave.
The Saints Sign Scott Steiner's Kid
Again, this signing is getting way more attention than a normal post-rookie minicamp signing from Jacksonville State would. Its not because of the team, or even the player, as much as it is about his lineage.
As we've said, Brock Rechsteiner is the son of Scott Steiner, the WWE Hall of Fame wrestler. But Steiner isn't just a pro wrestler, he was a decorated college athlete too.
Scott Steiner was a wrestler at the University of Michigan alongside his brother Rick. Scott finished as the runner up in his weight class 3 times in the Big 10 Conference during his first three years. His senior year, he was named an NCAA Division I All-American, and finished 6th in the nation.
In his pro wrestling career, Scott Steiner was a WCW Triple Crown Champion, multiple time Tag Team Champion across numerous promotions, and has been named to various wrestling Hall of Fames.
Does this mean Brock Rechsteiner is guaranteed to be a football Hall of Famer? No...but it does mean there are going to be a lot of extra eyes on his career.
