Sulphur's Jake Brown Selected in 2nd Round of 2026 MLB Draft by Seattle Mariners

Sulphur's Jake Brown was the first local player selected. The Seattle Mariners picked the LSU outfielder with the 65th overall pick in the second round on Saturday. It was the second time Brown had been drafted. The Texas Rangers selected him out of high school in 2023, but he bet on himself and chose to attend LSU instead.

That decision paid off with Brown becoming a fan-favorite and a National Champion in 2023.

"Jake's development as a player has been phenomenal," LSU Head Coach Jay Johnson said. "We don't win the 2025 National Championship without Jake. I'm excited to see his journey to the top of Major League Baseball."

In three seasons at LSU, he hit .304 with 28 home runs and 110 RBIs. During the 2026 season, Brown batted .309 with 16 home runs and 49 RBIs before missing the final 17 games because of a hand injury.

Barbe's Gavin Guidry Selected in 16th Round of 2026 MLB Draft by New York Mets

On Sunday, another local product heard his name called when the New York Mets selected former Barbe Buccaneer Gavin Guidry with the 480th overall pick in the 16th round.

"I am happy for Gavin getting an opportunity to play professional baseball," Johnson said. "He will go down as a great winner at LSU as a two-time National Champion."

Guidry made an immediate impact when he arrived at LSU in 2023. As a freshman, he earned three saves, including one in both the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional and Super Regional. He also pitched the final two innings in LSU's national championship victory over Florida.

Gavin finished his LSU career as a two-time national champion. During the 2026 season, the right-handed pitcher appeared in 21 games, including eight starts. He finished the year with a 5-3 record, striking out 59 batters in 43.2 innings.

Guidry has an opportunity to return to LSU if he doesn't choose to sign with the Mets.
