Authorities Respond to Social Media Threat Targeting Local Lafayette High School

A potential threat targeting Southside High School in Youngsville has caused concern among parents and students after an image of a gun, originating from Snapchat, began circulating on social media. The photo, which shows a gun and includes captions implying a threat, has been widely shared across various platforms, prompting an investigation by the Youngsville Police Department and the Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS).

However, after a thorough investigation, Youngsville Police Chief Cody Louviere confirmed that the image and its accompanying message are part of a larger hoax affecting multiple schools nationwide. “We have collaborated with local agencies and have jointly learned that the exact message being sent out has circulated through several different states via social media and is not a threat to Southside High School or any local school,” Louviere said in a statement. Despite the hoax, Louviere emphasized that his department takes all threats seriously, even when they are known to be false.

To ensure the safety and peace of mind of students and their families, extra officers were dispatched to Southside High School on Monday morning. Louviere reassured parents, saying, “The Youngsville Police Department will have extra officers at Southside this morning to alleviate any parents’ concerns.”

The LPSS also addressed the situation, echoing Louviere's sentiments and ensuring that student safety remains its top priority. In a message to parents and the community, LPSS reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a secure learning environment. “Our safety protocols are robust, and we work closely with local authorities to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” the statement read.

Both LPSS and local law enforcement agencies urged the community to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity.
