Authorities say Mason Richards was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries sustained from being struck by the bus in the 1400 block of Desire Street in New Orleans.

The bus driver cooperated with police and completed a sobriety test, which concluded that the driver was not impaired at the time of the accident.

The tragic loss of such a young life has deeply saddened the local community, according to a spokesperson for the family.

As the investigation continues, officials are urging drivers and caregivers to remain extra cautious during school pick-up and drop-off hours to prevent future tragedies.

Mason Richards attended one of the KIPP schools in the New Orleans area.

FOX 8 shared a statement from a spokeperson, “Our thoughts are with his family and our entire school community during this incredibly difficult time."
