Popular Kids Toy Sold In Louisiana Could Cause Severe Injuries

But sometimes, products designed to encourage fun and creativity can pose unexpected risks. That’s the case with a popular children’s jewelry-making kit sold at major retailers across Louisiana and the U.S.

Nationwide Recall Issued for Cra-Z-Art Jewelry Kits

LaRose Industries has recalled approximately 224,100 Cra-Z-Art Gemex and Gel2Gem jewelry-making kits due to a chemical hazard involving the resin used in the kits.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the included resin contains unsafe levels of hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA)—a substance that can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation, and even sensitization through contact, inhalation, or ingestion. The levels found violate federal safety standards under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act, especially concerning children’s products.

Affected Products & Where They Were Sold

This recall affects ten different Cra-Z-Art Gemex and Gel2Gem kits, plus one refill pack. Each kit includes a resin bottle and a UV setting light used to harden the jewelry designs. The kits include item numbers and UPC codes that are printed on the bottom of the product’s box.

The products were sold between January 2023 and September 2024 at the following stores, including many locations in Louisiana:

• Joann Fabrics
• Walmart
• Amazon.com
• Target.com
• Joann.com

Prices ranged from $13 to $36.

What Parents Should Do

If you have one of these kits at home:

• Stop using it immediately.
• Do not allow children to wear or handle jewelry made with liquid or uncured resin from these kits.
• Store the product out of children’s reach until it can be safely returned.

As of now, no injuries have been reported, but LaRose Industries is offering a full refund to all affected customers.
