For many NFL stars, the prospect of pre-season activities and training camp are met with a mix of horror and anxiety. Coming back after a break, a relatively short one at that can be a challenge, and apparently, this is an issue that has impacted New Orleans running back Jamaal Williams.
The 29-year-old California-born star moved to the Caesars Superdome franchise in 2023 and managed just four starts, amassing a total of 306 yards and just one rushing touchdown.
This is in marked contrast to what came before during his time at the Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions, and this coming campaign is one that Williams will want to make a real impact.
In 2023, Dennis Allen’s side failed to make it to the playoffs, but fans who believe that the New Orleans Saints can get back on track in 2024 might want to back that assertion with a bet. Williams has admitted to being a little out of sorts during recent practice sessions.
"Right now, I'm really going through it mentally," he said, smiling, according to this report. "I miss my cats; I miss my daughter. Just being out here – we're doing it football-wise, but I just miss the things that bring me peace when I'm done with football. And I ain't got it right now. I'm for sure sore and irritated at the moment.”
"I get impatient real quickly, because I don't have the things that bring me peace, that bring me happiness and soothe me," he continued. "But I'm good, though. I'm happy to be here with my teammates, ready to go through the grind. We're going through it together. I'm grateful to be here with my teammates, we all understand what we're going through together and we're going to handle this together." Williams added.
It’s now three seasons on the bounce that the Saints have failed to book a spot in the postseason, and pressure is no doubt building on Dennis Allen. With a view to boosting his roster, there is ongoing speculation about a move to bring in Justin Simmons.
The experienced safety is a free agent, and Allen has admitted Simmons is a player that interests him,
“He’s a player that’s shown an interest in us,” Allen said, according to this report. “We’ve got guys on our staff that have connections with him, guys that played with him. It’s exactly what it is, it’s a visit and we’ll talk about how we would see him, what type of vision we would have for him. And then if what we’re looking for and what he’s looking for match up, then we’ll see if it goes further than that.”
With regards to his side’s offense, this is something of a sticky area, with Allen admitting that he’s happy but not satisfied, and it’s most definitely an area he’ll be looking to improve on ahead of their opening match-up against the Carolina Panthers.
