Louisiana Bracing for Extreme Heat for Fourth of July Celebrations
(Lafayette, Louisiana) As Acadiana braces for Independence Day celebrations, you will want to be weather-aware, and it's not because of a storm in the area.
Many will be outdoors Friday, July 4th, standing over a grill, swimming, and popping fireworks while celebrating America's freedom, but need to know that it will be very hot.
How hot will it be? How about dangerously hot for the 4th? Temperatures in south Louisiana are expected to be in the mid-90s, and while that may be bearable for some, the heat indices will be well over 100 degrees.
While waving the red, white, and blue colors, temperatures can feel like 105 degrees or higher; therefore, you will want to protect yourself and your kids while outdoors on July 4th.
How to Stay Safe in a Heat Wave
Make sure to apply plenty of sunblock while out celebrating, and remember to stay hydrated throughout the day. And no, "Adult Beverages" are not a form of hydration, contrary to what some may believe.
In addition to those precautions, be sure to take breaks from the heat and make sure that the kids are getting out of the sun throughout the day. Taking small periodic breaks is essential when outdoors during the summer months.
We would also like to remind you that if you have pets outdoors, please ensure they have access to plenty of shade and water this weekend. Like you and I, pets can overheat and suffer from heat stroke if left outdoors in the heat for an extended period.

Have a great and safe Fourth of July, but please remember to take care of yourself and others while out in the heat.
Here's a look at the extended forecast for the 4th of July weekend, and as you'll see, there won't be many 'cooling showers' in Acadiana. Perhaps the garden hose or pool will be your best friend in the days ahead.
