When it comes to things we did not expect to see happen in the Amarillo area in 2025, one of the big ones would be something that happened in Canyon. Nobody saw the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum closing down.
It happened right before Spring Break, and they haven't been able to open their doors since. They’re still working on repairs and plans to reopen.. The great thing is that even with the doors shut, they are not letting that slow them down.

For most places, a closed door would mean the end of business. It would mean most things you expect to see happen there would cease to exist. That is not true with the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum.
Canyon’s Museum Closure Won’t Cancel Christmas
Every December, they host their Christmas Open House. They have Santa there to take photos. A lot of area choirs are invited to perform. It is a merry ol' time leading up to Christmas.
Don't think that the museum being closed is going to stop this event from happening. It is not. The holiday magic will still take place. They just had to pivot and find a new way to bring the magic back.
What to Expect at the Outdoor Open House
The show will still go on December 6th from 1 pm to 3 pm on the east lawn, according to the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum:
Ring in the holiday season with PPHM's annual Christmas Open House!
The east lawn will be full of holiday cheer for one afternoon only! Santa will be ready to take requests and photos with children at the T-Anchor. Sip on some hot cocoa or cider while you listen to songs by local children's choirs. Grab a delicious cookie and create a fun holiday-themed craft to hang on your tree.
The event is free of charge. Suggested admission is one can of food or $1 per person to benefit the High Plains Food Bank.
