WARNING! Texas Residents Will Need This to Board a Plane
Flying can already be a headache, and the last thing you want is to be stopped at security because you don’t have the right ID. Time is running out for Texas residents, and if you don’t act fast, you could find yourself stranded at the airport! Please don’t wait until it’s too late, We've got everything you need to know about this new process...
As the May 2025 deadline gets closer, DPS offices will get busier, and wait times will go up. If you plan to travel, don’t put this off! If you don’t have a Real ID by the deadline, you’ll need a valid passport or military ID to board your flight.
If your Texas driver’s license expired on or after March 1, 2020, the TSA may still accept it temporarily. However, it’s better to be safe than sorry. I recently passed through several airports, and nearly every sign inside was a reminder about the Real ID deadline.
What is a Real ID?
A Real ID is different from a regular Texas driver’s license because it meets federal security standards. You can still use a regular license for driving, but it won’t work for airport security or getting into federal buildings. If you fly often or need access to federal offices, getting a Real ID now will save you trouble later.
How to Get a Real ID in Texas
The process is simple, but you’ll need the right documents. Here’s what you’ll need to bring to your local Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) office:
- Proof of identity (like a birth certificate or passport)
- Proof of Social Security (such as a Social Security card or W-2 form)
- Two documents showing your Texas address (like a utility bill or lease agreement)
Once you have these, head to the DPS to apply. There’s a small fee, usually between $5 and $15, depending on whether you’re renewing your license at the same time.
The deadline is coming fast, so take a few minutes to check if your ID is Real ID-compliant. If not, visit the Texas DPS website and start the process now. A little preparation now will save you a big headache later!
